-Diversity Experience-
-Pinedale Elementary School: 2011-2012-
I worked as an instructional aid at this school for a long period of time. This school was located in a low socio - economic area where the school had to work with families that struggled to make ends meet. I saw a school that would plan and create solutions for these families not only school wide but in the classrooms as well. Teachers dealt with students who would come to school wearing the same clothes everyday, not having the supplies needed for class, and not having the drive to succeed. I saw and was taught first hand how teachers use their strategies to get students to actively learn and succeed no matter what was happening in their real world. It was a very eye opening experience that I still carry to this day and include it in my own teaching.
-Mexico Mission Trip: Summer 2007-
I was privileged to be able to take a mission trip down into Baja California to work with a church that is in a very poor area. We worked with the locals and rebuilt portions of the church, the pastors house, and the playground next to the church. It was a humbling experience where we connected with kids who humbled us by their lifestyle and hobbies. They were used to not having a lot and were ecstatic when we provided small things like basketball nets and straight rims. It opens your eyes to see all students no matter what lifestyle they come from and it shows you that all students are same on the inside where it matters. As a teacher it has shown me that you teach to each student specifically and get to know each student for the person they are under the surface.
